Within the framework of the European TechTide project (http://www.tech-tide.eu/) the Ebro Observatory-URL has published a new tool that detects, in real time, the main characteristics of the travelling ionospheric disturbances (TIDs); how are the period, speed and direction of propagation.
TIDs are ionospheric plasma density variations that propagate in a waveform through the ionosphere and may affect the operation of radio-electrical signal-based systems, such as communication, geolocation or navigation systems. In order to detect large-scale TIDs, the tool uses ionospheric digisondes of European and South African networks.
The main objective of the TechTIDE project is to design new strategies to mitigate the impact of TIDs on technological systems and in real time.
